Pensacola "City of Five Flags": Where did it come from?

Pensacola is often referred to as the "City of Five Flags" due to its unique history of being governed by five different flags throughout its past. These flags represent the various nations that have had control over the area at different points in time.

The five flags are:

Spanish Flag: Pensacola was initially settled by the Spanish in 1559, making it one of the earliest European settlements in the United States. The Spanish held control over the area for several periods during the colonial era.

French Flag: The French briefly controlled Pensacola in the late 18th century, following their involvement in the American Revolutionary War.

British Flag: Pensacola came under British rule during the period of British West Florida from 1763 to 1781, following the conclusion of the French and Indian War.

Confederate Flag: During the American Civil War, Pensacola was part of the Confederate States of America, which declared its secession from the Union in 1861.

United States Flag: Pensacola became part of the United States in 1821 when Florida was acquired from Spain through the Adams-Onís Treaty. Since then, it has remained under U.S. control.

The city's diverse history, shaped by the influence of these five nations, is celebrated through its cultural heritage, architecture, and various historical landmarks, hence earning it the nickname "City of Five Flags."
